Press release from the Førde Festival Dec 19, 2017

Hilde Bjørkum has headed the Førde Festival since the autumn of 1989, interrupted only by two maternity leave periods and one year as county musician.  “It has been a long, interesting and instructive journey,” Bjørkum says.  “Now the time has come to leave the ship to new hands, and I have therefore informed the board that I wish to stand down as director once the Festival from 4 to 8 July 2018 has been completed.

“We have built the Festival brick by brick through many years, through hard work and unfailing commitment, and in collaboration with a number of generous helping hands; volunteers, public and private sponsors and good partners in cultural life,” Bjørkum says.

From a meagre start with a 50% project position, the Førde Festival is now an important cultural institution in the county with 6 specialist positions and an annual turnover of around NOK 19 million.  The Festival is Scandinavia’s largest of its kind, and is recognized internationally for its high quality both in terms of artists and events, and for its distinct and characteristic profile.

The opening for new director will be announced just after the new year, and chairwoman Tone Winje believes the position is attractive.  “Hilde Bjørkum has laid down an excellent foundation through her many years of hard work. We would like to thank her for the huge effort she has put in to develop the Festival into what it is today. The new director will take over a healthy organization with excellent opportunities for further development,” she says.

From 1 September Bjørkum will take on a 50% consultant position at the Festival with focus on development work.

The Førde Festival is one of the largest multicultural events in Norway, and the largest festival for acoustic folk music and world music in Scandinavia. Every year around 300 performers from all over the world are presented in around 90 events. The total number of visitors is 25-30,000 per year. Since 2010 the Førde Festival has been named one of the 25 best of its kind by the international publication Songlines, and is also ranked on exclusive festival lists in the Guardian and National Geographic Travel. HRH Crown Princess Mette-Marit is the patron of the Festival, which will be held for the 29th time from 4-8 July 2018.  Programme information and other details are available at www.fordefestival.no
